Stop 1:

St. Mary’s Church (The Starting Point)

The History:

Start at the Church of St. Mary. Built in the 13th century, this "Church in the Dunes" was once painted white to serve as a vital landmark for ships.

What to look for: Notice how the dunes have "crept" up toward the church over the centuries. Inside, look for the 14th-century font and the beautiful stained glass.

Location: Coast Road, Berrow (TA8 2NF).

Stop 2: The Berrow Dunes (SSSI)

The History:

Follow the marked path from the churchyard into the dunes. This is one of the rarest habitats in the UK.

What to look for: Depending on the season, look for the rare Lizard Orchid or the Jack Snipe bird. These dunes have shifted for 1,000 years, once threatening to swallow the village entirely.

Stop 3: The Wreck of the SS Nornen

The History:

Head out onto the beach. About 100 yards to your right (North), you’ll see the wooden ribs of the SS Nornen. In 1897, local heroes from the Burnham Lifeboat rescued the entire crew and the ship's dog during a terrifying gale.

Note: Only visible at low tide. Always check the tide times before walking out!

Stop 4: The Rare Stone Pigsty

The History:

Walk back toward the village via the footpath through the Burnham & Berrow Golf Course (est. 1891). Head toward Barton Road.

What to look for: This is the circular "beehive" sty you photographed. It is a Grade II listed structure and one of the only "Welsh-style" sties in England. It stands as a symbol of the village’s self-sufficient farming past.

Location: Barton Road, near the Community Centre.

Stop 5: The Old Court House & "Judge Jeffreys"

The History:

Head back toward the church via the village lanes. Pass the site of the Old Court House.

Local Legend: This is where the "Hanging Judge" Jeffreys is said to have held court after the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685. It serves as a reminder of the village’s brush with one of the most turbulent times in British history.

Trail Tips

Distance:

Approx 2.3 miles.

Terrain: Level; a mix of sandy dunes, beach, and paved village paths.

Check tide times for the shipwreck and stay on the paths when crossing the golf course to avoid stray balls!
